Recognition, appreciation ranks high among job seekers
KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Nov 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Nov 2007: A survey on the top 10 reasons why job seekers make career changes, conducted by JobStreet.com recently, revealed that other than the expected bread-and-butter issues with compensation and benefits, the next most common reason for people in Malaysia to leave their jobs for another is to seek greater challenges and experiences elsewhere.

Out of the more than 3,200 job seekers that took part in the survey, 41 percent chose this as one of their top three reasons for moving along to another job in their present career paths.

Ranking very closely among the top reasons were the lack of recognition or appreciation by their companies (chosen by 36 percent of the respondents) as well as promotion opportunities (35 percent).

Women were more sensitive than the men about the lack of recognition in their workplace. Appreciation from their supervisors for the work they do counted a lot for them. On the other hand, men in general looked more towards getting a promotion as a gratification for their work. Men regarded promotions as more tangible rewards than recognition.

The survey also showed that 32 percent of the respondents were not unreceptive towards the idea of exploring a career path that is different from their present ones.

Generally, we also found that the younger job seekers - those who were below 25 years old - were keener to explore new career paths while the more matured job seekers were less inclined. People in their late 20s were more concerned about promotion opportunities while to people who were 30 years and older, the lack of recognition and appreciation was a more visible area of discontentment.
