Visitors
to the bank were greeted by a sweet smell hanging in the
atmosphere. Only it wasn't the latest perfume by Coco
Chanel.
Our comprador (i.e. the
local guy taking care of the sales department) would casually
remove the hookah from his mouth and offer any interested
customer a drag.
Simply to put them at ease,
you understand. A method that was completely legal and,
according to the record books, worked only too well.
One hundred years later,
our enterprising comprador has been replaced by the Citibank
Sales Professional. The opium pipe, by an evening at a
swanky restaurant.
From a staff of less than
500, we now have over 30,000 people handling 11 million
accounts worldwide. Revenues are in excess of USD4 billion.
That's bigger than the GDP of some countries. Several
countries combined, in fact.
(Apparently, it's easier
to separate a rhino from her young than the neighbourhood

Remember our comprador?
Kan Tang-po, as he was known, went on to establish the
Bank of East Asia. By the end of the twentieth century,
it was the biggest locally-owned bank in Hong Kong.
