What's it like to be an Animator?
Putting stories and ideas in motion is the primary role of an Animator. Typically, they work in creative industries; however, as video expands its usage, Animators can now find opportunities in other sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and eLearning. An Animator usually spends most of their time drafting and animating movements for videos. They may further work on making drawings move realistically and presenting their ideas with creativity and visual appeal.
Tasks and duties
- Understanding the animation needs of the project and the client.
- Drafting storyboards to plan for the layout of the project.
- Drawing 2D sketches, artwork, and illustrations.
- Designing assets for use in animation.
- Timing the movement of created assets to fit the overall theme.
- Collaborating with editors to complete the project.
How to become an Animator
There are no formal qualifications required to become an Animator, however a qualification in animation may be beneficial.
- 1.Get a diploma or degree in animation. This will build your skills in hand drawing, creative thinking and help you understand the production process.
- 2.Explore graphic design and animation software. Many industries use Adobe Creative Suite, Krita, and Inkscape for graphic design. Meanwhile, industry-standard animation software include Blender, Autodesk Maya, Cinema4D, and Toon Boom Harmony.
- 3.Build a portfolio. Aside from technical know-how, Animators need to show how they communicate ideas. A portfolio will show how you bring stories to life through video.
