What's it like to be a Coxswain?
Coxswains are sailors who can man different types of sea crafts, from fishing boats and trading vessels to small tourist crafts and lifeboats. To steer and navigate these small vessels, they use ropes, chains, anchors, rigging gear, and other tools. Also called helmsman or steersman, the Coxswain follows the safest course towards the boat’s destination.
Tasks and duties
- Steering and navigating small vessels.
- Monitoring weather conditions and informing authorities before embarking.
- Directing the crew and updating logbooks.
- Relaying navigational information through the radio or telephone.
- Using navigational equipment and strategies.
- Helping in mooring and unmooring boats.
- Overseeing the maintenance of onboard mechanical equipment.
- Handling emergency situations.
How to become a Coxswain
Coxswains use their seamanship skills in a variety of industries such as tourism, manufacturing, and search and rescue operations. Relevant training will give you the best chance of employment in this role.
- This role typically requires the completion of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam.
- Consider starting off in an entry-level role like Coxswain Trainee to work under a Senior Coxswain. Through this, you’ll learn not only job basics but also your employer’s particular requirements.
- Some companies require applicants to be certified by the Department of Skills Development (DSD). Aside from three levels of basic certification, the DSD offers the Malaysian Skills Diploma (DKM) and the Malaysian Advanced Skills Diploma. These certifications may be acquired through training programs from accredited institutions, apprenticeship with the National Dual Training System provided by companies and training organisations, and proof of past experience through work and training as well as current competencies.
