What's it like to be a Dietitian?
Dietitians are recognised health practitioners in Malaysia that identify and treat nutrition-related diseases that can be prevented through medical nutrition therapy. The profession is sometimes mistakenly referred to as Nutritionist. The difference between these two practices is that dietitians are regulated and licensed. They manage dietary healthcare to help treat diseases due to malnutrition.Tasks and duties
- Prescribing individual nutritional requirements.
- Designing meal plans based on health requirements.
- Providing dietary counselling to manage disease.
- Managing food services for food and nutritional organisations.
- Researching and recommending new combinations of foods that contribute to healthy lifestyles.
How to become a Dietitian
Beginning a career as a Dietitian requires years of study to get a degree in dietetics or nutrition. A relevant degree provides knowledge on food science, food preparation, basics of anatomy, genetics, and other related subjects. Like many healthcare professionals, Dietitians have to go through internships mostly in a hospital or clinical setting.
- 1.Prepare for a university degree. As a regulated profession in Malaysia, students should get a pre-university qualification such as A-Level, STPM, or Foundation in Science.
- 2.Pursue a degree in dietetics or nutrition.
- 3.Get an internship. Part of the requirements to become a qualified dietitian involve getting experience from Dietetics Internship Training as part of your degree.
- 4.Choose your specialisation. You can pursue career paths including a clinical dietitian, consultant dietitian, food service dietitian, researcher, or health educator. You can also pursue a commercial path in pharmaceutical or food industries that specialise in producing nutrition and diet related products.
