What's it like to be a Doctor?
A Doctor's responsibilities involve providing medical care, diagnosing illnesses and improving patient health and overall wellbeing. Doctors are an integral part in the healthcare system as primary caregivers and experts in diagnosing and treating various medical conditions; working in close conjunction with patients, families and other healthcare professionals in providing compassionate and comprehensive services to patients. Doctors possess extensive knowledge of medical sciences, diagnostic techniques, and treatment methodologies. They assess patient symptoms, order diagnostic tests to diagnose conditions accurately, interpret results and develop tailored treatment plans.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting patient consultations and medical exams to diagnose and treat illness.
- Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests such as blood tests, X-rays and imaging scans for diagnosis purposes.
- Developing treatment plans based on medical findings and patient needs.
- Prescribing medications, administering vaccinations, and providing preventive care services.
- Monitoring patient progress, conducting follow-up visits, and making adjustments to treatments as necessary.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary healthcare teams for holistic patient care.
How to become a Doctor
In order to become a Doctor, extensive education and training is required.
Complete all the required pre-university studies such as A-Levels, International Baccalaureate Diploma or Matriculation examinations while specialising in science subjects.
Apply and gain admission into one of Malaysia's medical degree programs such as Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or Doctor of Medicine (MD). These programs typically last five or six years to complete.
After graduating medical school, you must complete a two-year housemanship training program which gives hands-on experience across various medical specialties, with rotations to various departments.
Register with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). After completing your housemanship training, register with the MMC in order to secure a full licence to practise medicine in Malaysia.
Pursue specialisation or postgraduate training. Physicians can pursue a specialisation or postgraduate training to specialise in an area of medicine by enrolling in postgraduate degree programs. Specialties you may choose from include family medicine, surgery, cardiology or paediatrics among others.
