What's it like to be an Electrical Engineer?
An Electrical Engineer is responsible for designing essential equipment that make use of electricity or power generation, from microchips in cellular devices to navigational systems for public transport. They handle issues from large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control, to personal or public devices for personal day-to-day use or for public benefit. Electrical Engineers also design the electrical systems of automobiles and aircraft.Tasks and duties
- Developing new methods that use electrical power.
- Installing and examining electrical systems and procedures.
- Using software to plan, design, and improve electrical systems.
- Coordinating with the team on manufacturing, construction and installation.
- Directing the manufacturing, installation and testing of electrical equipment.
- Managing various electrical projects to ensure work is completed well, on time, and within budget.
How to become an Electrical Engineer
To become an Electrical Engineer you will need more than a high school diploma. A bachelor degree is essential, and higher education such as a masters degree or a PhD will help you further your career.
- 1.Complete a diploma in electrical engineering. Some of the requirements include completion of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or the Malaysian Certificate of Education.
- 2.Continue your studies with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. A relevant bachelor degree is required to register as a Graduate Engineer, a prerequisite to becoming recognised as a Professional Engineer once you have gained enough experience.
- 3.As an option, you may also take up further studies such as a masters degree in electrical and electronic engineering.
- 4.In order to register as a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), you must have three years of professional development and work experience, and pass the Professional Assessment Examination (PAE).
