What's it like to be a Factory Manager?
A Factory Manager oversees the operations of a manufacturing facility and is often responsibile for managing the smooth operation and quality standards of products within an agreed budget. They plan and draw up production schedules and enforce health and safety protocols. Factory Managers typically work in various manufacturing sectors like automotive, food and drink, clothing or technology. They lead a team of personnel, liaising with different departments like human resources, logistics and quality control.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing all manufacturing operations, maintain product standards and ensure smooth and efficient processes.
- Implementing strategies for effective production management, including the allocation of labour and resources.
- Monitoring production output and quality standards as well as taking corrective actions where necessary.
- Complying with health and safety regulations in the workplace to safeguard employees.
- Developing and implementing budgets, preparing reports for senior management and ensuring the factory operates within set budget guidelines.
- Coordinating with other managers and staff to set goals, objectives and strategies for a facility.
- Meeting with suppliers and clients to maintain and build effective relationships.
How to become a Factory Manager
This is a mid-level position that requires years of experience and at least a diploma. A bachelor or master degree is preferred.
- 1.Complete a diploma or bachelor degree in Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Logistics, or another related field.
- 2.Gain industry experience through internships, apprenticeships, and freelance engagements in factories.
- 3.Get an entry-level job such as machine operator or assembler.
- 4.Get promoted to higher jobs such as factory supervisor.
- 5.Obtain qualification such as FMM Certificate in Production Planning and Control from the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers.
- 6.Consider taking a postgraduate degree such as Master of Manufacturing Management.
