What's it like to be a Food and Beverage Supervisor?
Food and Beverage Supervisors primarily manage the food service aspect of restaurants, hotels, resorts, and similar establishments in the tourism and hospitality industry. The job entails overseeing food planning, presentation and serving, and ensuring that the entire process or operation complies with relevant guidelines, procedures, and regulations.
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring the food and beverage team to ensure consistent and efficient performance of duties.
- Addressing issues arising from the daily operations of the department, including customer complaints, inventory shrinkage, and food wastage.
- Handling administrative tasks from budgeting and procurement of products, to managing inventory and reporting.
- Providing timely and relevant training, workshops, and seminars to new and existing personnel.
The role of Food and Beverage Supervisors, also known as Food Service Managers, combines industry expertise and applicable skills, specifically in leadership and management. They must also be able to effectively multitask to successfully manage their various responsibilities.
How to become a Food and Beverage Supervisor
Most Food and Beverage Supervisors have a background and qualifications in the hospitality, tourism, or hotel and restaurant fields.

Complete a bachelor degree in culinary arts, hospitality management, or food science and technology, which are available in a number of universities and colleges in Malaysia.

Pursue further studies to enhance your industry knowledge. Some institutions also offer master degrees in the same areas, or in related fields like entrepreneurship or business management which will help you build useful skills for the role.

Alternatively, take certificate courses in food and beverage services and similar fields which are more specific for the profession.

Acquire training at hotels and restaurants. Once you have gained at least 2-3 years of experience, you can strive for more senior positions including being a Food and Beverage Supervisor.
