What's it like to be a Functional Consultant?
A Functional Consultant accepts commissions from clients, such as board of directors, government agencies, and corporations. They study a client’s software and determine their particular needs. Functional Consultants are skilled in managing problems and presenting solutions backed up by research. They often collaborate with Business Analysts, Technical Consultants, and Software Engineers to provide technical solutions.Tasks and duties
- Facilitating business processes and discussing technical development specifications.
- Studying the current business processes and the design of business flows.
- Analysing business and technical requirements to develop solutions.
- Customising a client’s business area and ensuring that a new system reacts appropriately.
- Documenting functional and technical specifications for the development team.
- Coordinating system integration testing and user acceptance.
- Preparing test plans and scripts and performing unit, integration, and regression testing.
- Creating and updating user guides and other required documentation.
- Conducting intensive research about the organisation and its target consumers.
How to become a Functional Consultant
To become a Functional Consultant, you need to have a formal educational background and a set of skills that can be acquired through years of experience.
- 1.Pursue a degree in computer science or another related field such as information science, software engineering, or computer animation. During this time, focus on building industry-specific skills. An internship will also be beneficial as it will provide you with experience in the industry.
- 2.Look to acquire an entry-level IT position in the field you wish to proceed in to gain hands-on experience. Many Functional Consultants start as Technical Consultants or Consultants.
- 3.After several years of experience creating technical solutions for companies, actively seek job opportunities as a Functional Consultant. You can either apply to an IT consulting firm, or you can work as a contractor.
