How to become an Interior Designer
If you want to pursue a career in interior design, you will need to have an understanding of various aspects of interior design, such as textiles, decorative arts, furniture and ergonomics. A formal education in interior design will prepare you for the workforce.
- 1.Complete a secondary school certificate or the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). Some institutions may require that you take and pass an art course at SPM level. Otherwise, you may need to present and pass a portfolio review.
- 2.Obtain a diploma in interior design, which can take about two to three years to complete. Here, you will learn less about theory and more about application through hands-on designing. You will learn the basic principles of colour and various designing techniques, as well as how to choose materials and utilise AutoCAD software.
- 3.While not necessary, a degree in interior design may look attractive to prospective clients. If you have not completed the SPM and a pre-university programme, you will need to pass a competitive portfolio review.
- 4.Look for employment. Interior designers can choose to start their own business, work on contract with a company, or in an interior design firm. Depending on whether you specialise in residential or commercial design, your work environment and dynamics will also vary.
