What's it like to be a Lawyer?
A Lawyer is an educated and certified professional that protects people’s rights and helps to implement the law. Lawyers can work in law firms in the private sector, the public sector, or put up their own office. The job consists of talking to clients, gathering data for cases, and building strong arguments to support their clients in court. They must memorise and understand the laws of their jurisdiction in order to interpret cases and defend their clients.Tasks and duties
- Representing and advising clients in courts.
- Communicating with clients and witnesses involved in a case.
- Researching and analysing evidence.
- Interpreting contracts and laws.
- Presenting and arguing facts through verbal and written communication.
- Filing legal documents such as lawsuits, appeals, wills, contracts and deeds.
How to become a Lawyer
After completing a Bachelor of Laws and passing all exams and requirements, most Lawyers start out as Research Assistants to more experienced Lawyers, compiling data for cases and observing at court. With experience, they can rise to the position of junior partner to senior partner and then build their own law firm once they have built their practice and client base.
- 1.Complete secondary school with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification.
- 2.Complete a Diploma in Law.
- 3.Complete a Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP), or bar professional training course.
- 4.Complete nine months of Pupillage (Chambering), a practical training course.
- 5.Pass all Malaysian bar examinations and legal aid programs during the Pupillage.
- 6.Obtain status as a fully-qualified Lawyer from the bar.
