What's it like to be a Legal Manager?
Legal Managers generally coordinate and handle an organisation's legal affairs and may manage a team of lawyers and paralegals, ensuring that all legal matters are handled effectively and within the bounds of the law. They draft, negotiate and execute agreements, corporate contracts and other legal documents as well. Legal Managers tend to offer advice and support for arising legal issues to all departments within a company. This role often works in industries such as law firms, corporations or government bodies.
Tasks and duties
- Developing and implementing the company's legal strategies.
- Overseeing legal aspects of real estate transactions and business deals.
- Advising on legal issues involving company contracts and any other matters affecting a company.
- Reviewing and advising management on legal implications of internal policies and procedures.
- Coordinating and managing external legal resources as required.
- Ensuring the company operates in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
How to become a Legal Manager
This is a high-level specialised role that typically requires a law degree and years of legal experience. Specialisation in corporate law and a Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) are highly preferred.
- 1.Get a CGPA of 2.67 at STPM to qualify for a law degree.
- 2.Graduate with a 4-year bachelor degree in law.
- 3.Obtain a Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) by passing the qualifying exam.
- 4.Undergo pupillage under a mentor for 9 months to qualify for the Malaysian Bar.
- 5.Consider specialising in business law.
- 6.Gain years of legal experience under a law firm or start your own private practice.
