What's it like to be a Management Information Systems Manager?
A Management Information Systems Manager is in charge of heading and overseeing the information systems used in an organisation — notably the hardware and software used in a company’s information technology (IT) department, and its security systems. They are also in charge of supervising administrator systems, system-wide updates across the organisation, and restricting and granting access to authorised members.Tasks and duties
- Overseeing the IT department and managing its team of IT specialists.
- Training existing and new IT professionals, such as support specialists, IT analysts and technicians, and network engineers.
- Managing the company’s regular hardware and software installations and upgrades.
- Developing and managing the organisation’s private intranet and public internet sites.
- Managing and assessing the IT department budget allocated for hardware or system upgrades.
- Regularly auditing information systems to identify problem areas or areas that need improvement.
- Helping to plan and design technologies based on an organisation’s growing needs.
- Scheduling periodical computer system updates.
- Evaluating and implementing high-level cybersecurity measures.
- Implementing new business technologies or software to improve the organisation’s systems.
How to become a Management Information Systems Manager
To be a Management Information Systems Manager, you will need 3 to 5 years of experience in information systems management. Additional certifications or a master degree may further help you secure a management position.
- 1.Obtain a four-year or five-year bachelor degree in management information systems, information technology, or another similar field.
- 2.Gain an internship programme in technical support to enhance your resume.
- 3.Gain 2 to 3 more years of experience working in an IT role.
- 4.Consider a masters degree in information systems, or specialised certifications in specialities such as cybersecurity including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
