What's it like to be a Mechanical Design Engineer?
A Mechanical Design Engineer uses physics, mechanics and chemistry to create prototypes for machines. They test and refine their prototypes to create new gadgets and tools. They monitor the performance of their prototypes and oversee their manufacturing. Problem-solving, innovation and creativity are key skills for the role. Mechanical Design Engineers work in research laboratories, manufacturing, and automotive industries.
Tasks and duties
- Designing products with computer-aided design (CAD) and presenting designs to the manufacturing team.
- Monitoring, testing, and recording prototype performance for optimisation.
- Costing and budgeting prototypes for approval by management.
- Meeting performance, safety, and regulatory standards for product designs.
- Strategising improvements for engine model plans.
- Documenting product operations for user manuals.
- Benchmarking prototypes with industry competitors.
How to become a Mechanical Design Engineer
A bachelor degree and graduate engineering certificate are required to work as a Mechanical Design Engineer. Qualification by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) requires around three years of relevant work experience and continuing education.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering design, chemical engineering, or another related degree.
- 2.
Complete an internship at a recognised research laboratory or manufacturing company.
- 3.
Gain two years of experience as an Engineer and one year of professional development and training to be eligible for qualification as a Graduate Engineer.
- 4.
Take and pass the Professional Assessment Exam (PAE) administered by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). The exam consists of a professional interview and a written examination with two essays.

Register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) as a Graduate Engineer.
- 6.
Maintain your status as a Graduate Engineer by recording 25 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) annually.
- 7.
Get promoted to higher positions such as Design Manager or Associate Director.
