What's it like to be a Producer?
Producers manage the overall creation of a television, film, or music project, from pre-production, production, to post-production. They may work independently or for a production or record company. Their typical day will involve arranging schedules for filming or recording, attending shoots or recordings, reviewing scripts, coordinating with directors, writers, and talents, and pitching projects to potential sponsors. Producers also oversee the budgeting, spending, and sourcing of investors, hire writers, choose the script, and handpick members of the production team such as the Director.Tasks and duties
- Working closely with the director on the hiring of the production team.
- Looking after the day-to-day scheduling, logistics, and financing of projects.
- Attending shoots or recordings.
- Facilitating meetings with crew, actors, and production team on progress of the project.
- Overseeing all elements of onsite production.
- Signing off on major production decisions.
How to become a Producer
More often than not, aspiring Producers have obtained a degree related to filmmaking such as communication, broadcasting, advertising, or journalism. However, there is no one path to getting into the film, television, or music production industry.
- 1.Attain at least a college degree in advertising, broadcasting, communication, or journalism.
- 2.Build your portfolio. Gather scripts you've written, mini films you've produced, and other edited material you've created and include these. It can be simple projects you submitted in university or may be commissioned projects. This will provide a prospective employer an idea of your writing style, directing and editing know-how, and level of your production quality. You can also join film festivals to get recognition for your work.
- 3.If you have an online platform such as a YouTube channel or Vimeo account, you can also use these to showcase your filmmaking style. Let your creativity run free so you can fully display the breadth of your work and skills.
- 4.Gain experience in the industry as a Production Assistant or Runner, which may entail tasks such as buying coffee for actors or setting up equipment.
