A Product Engineer oversees the development and improvement of products. They make up an important part of the design and manufacturing process. Product Engineers turn a product concept or design into a functional real-world product with the use of a wide range of tools and technologies to turn a concept into reality. To bring a design to life, they may use computer programs and create digital models, or utilise special machines to create prototypes.
Tasks and duties

- Developing plans and processes for creating or improving products.
- Applying engineering principles to ensure the strength, safety, and usability of a product.
- Leveraging tools and technologies to create digital models and prototypes.
- Testing prototypes to ensure functionality and quality.
- Working closely with manufacturing teams to analyse and optimise the process for mass production.
- Ensuring that manufacturing processes are cost-effective and efficient.
- Identifying potential opportunities for product improvements.
A Product Engineer is expected to work closely with Designers and other product development teams. This is so they can better understand the intended purpose, appearance, and functionality of a product. They are expected to use engineering principles to construct a product and map out its process. Aside from new products, Product Engineers may also be tasked to work on existing products, improving and enhancing their performance. Product Engineers also work with other departments such as the manufacturing teams to ensure an efficient, cost-effective, and reliable method to produce the item in bulk and prepare for mass production. Product Engineers are also responsible for ensuring the product quality that comes out during production.
How to become a Product Engineer
To become a Product Engineer in Malaysia, you will typically need a bachelor degree in engineering, with the speciality depending on your chosen industry.
