Public Relations Officers protect the image and reputation of an organisation, while also promoting a positive image to the public. This is done by maintaining media relationships, promoting projects and initiatives, disseminating press releases, and coaching clients on how to present themselves to the public. A Public Relations Officer possesses charisma, writing skills, and interpersonal communication skills.Tasks and duties
- Planning and managing public relations projects, such as campaigns, events, and press conferences.
- Writing and disseminating press releases, public statements, newsletters, and stockholder reports, and responding to inquiries from the media.
- Building media connections and establishing relationships with consumer communities.
- Promoting a favourable image of the organisation to customers and stockholders.
- Coaching spokespersons and executives in effective communication strategies in order to respond to media or consumer inquiries.
- Ensuring public relations initiatives are aligned with the organisation's vision and mission.
- Maintaining an organisation’s public channels, such as social media and official website.
- Consulting executives on a business project’s impact on an organisation’s reputation and image.
- Responding to emergency situations with public relations crisis management strategies.
How to become a Public Relations Officer
Public relations is not a licenced field in Malaysia, and aspiring Public Relations Officers have a broad selection of specialties to choose from.
- 1.Attain the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and enrol in a pre-university program or Foundation program or pursue a diploma.
- 2.Pursue a bachelor degree in public relations, journalism, mass communications, marketing, advertising or business, and complete internships at established companies and organisations.
- 3.Build a network of media connections, brand ambassadors, spokespersons, influencers, executives, and fellow Public Relations Officers.
- 4.Work at an established public relations agency or as the Public Relations Officer of a company and find your specialty as you work, whether it be crisis management, social media management, or publicity.
- 5.Set up your own small public relations agency. Many veterans of the public relations industry go on to build their own businesses.
