What's it like to be a Sales Engineer?
Sales Engineers combine their technological knowledge with their sales skills. They work closely with businesses to demonstrate how their organisation’s products and services can meet the required specifications. Not only do Sales Engineers present technical and scientific products to prospective clients, they also negotiate sales contracts, provide technical support to existing clients, and seek out new sales opportunities. They usually operate within an advisory role in their organisation and are likely to work with teams in other departments such as research and development, production managers and other senior-level staff. The role can span across various market sectors including manufacturing, telecommunications and scientific industries.
Tasks and duties
- Discussing a company's technological needs and demonstrating how the product will meet them.
- Establishing new accounts and maintaining existing client relationships.
- Presenting and explaining complex technical product information to customers and clients.
- Collaborating with sales teams to understand customer requirements and provide technical sales support.
- Assisting in the development of formal sales proposals and responses to requests for information.
- Designing and modifying products to meet customer needs.
- Staying updated with the latest technical product developments and market trends.
How to become a Sales Engineer
- 1.Complete SPM with at least 3Cs in math, science and English.
- 2.Complete a diploma or degree in engineering.
- 3.Register as a Graduate Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
- 4.Gain three years of work experience including one year of professional career development training under the supervision of a Senior Engineer.
- 5.Register as a Professional Engineer with the BEM.
- 6.Gain sales experience through networking, doing commission sales or volunteering.
