What's it like to be a Sales Manager?
Sales Managers formulate sales strategies by setting business quotas and goals. To carry out these plans, they build and train a team of sales professionals. Under these managers’ guidance, sales teams are motivated to meet targets and expand their client base. Sales Managers are also involved in determining inventory, assigning sales territories to effectively distribute company products and services, and at times, in hiring sales staff. In bigger organisations, they may supervise regional and local sales managers, and their teams.Tasks and duties
- Setting sales goals and monitoring progress.
- Coordinating training programs for team members.
- Ensuring that sales representatives meet quotas and goals.
- Determining sales potential of products and services.
- Monitoring customer satisfaction.
- Developing sales plans and preparing budgets.
- Working closely with the marketing department in generating leads.
- Writing sales results and progress, and reporting these to top management.
How to become a Sales Manager
Sales Managers contribute to an organisation’s customer service practices. This senior role requires skills and knowledge developed through experience.
- 1.Finish a diploma course or bachelor degree in marketing, business, accounting, economics, finance, or another related course.
- 2.Gain at least three to five years of professional experience in sales and marketing. While studying, you can finish internships to gain hands-on knowledge. Typically, employers look for solid experience in planning sales strategies, managing customer relationships, and leading a team.
- 3.Examples of entry-level positions for this role include Sales Representative, Sales Assistant, Salesperson and Customer Service Representative.
- 4.Advance your career by finishing a masters degree in business administration or a related course. With your work experience, an advanced degree can set you apart from other candidates. After becoming a Sales Manager, you can move up to Sales Director, and eventually to higher positions such as Vice President of Sales and Chief Revenue Officer.
