What's it like to be a Solutions Architect?
Solution Architects may be employed in-house by organisations in a wide variety of industries, or work as outsourced professionals. Solutions Architects identify business needs and issues, and determine how these can be met and resolved through software, hardware, information technology (IT) services, products and infrastructure. They also evaluate current systems to spot pain points and resolve them as well as build and monitor computer systems alongside other IT professionals.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying gaps in business processes that can be supported by IT solutions.
- Conducting meetings to formulate possible solutions to business issues.
- Completing and filing testing requirements.
- Managing projects.
- Collaborating with other departments to create IT plans and improve existing measures.
- Monitoring implementation of IT solutions across the organisation.
- Helping clients or managers recognise potential business demands and plan for future system changes.
How to become a Solutions Architect
You usually need a formal qualification and industry experience to become a Solutions Architect. Additional IT certifications can improve your employability.
- Complete at least a bachelor degree in information technology, software engineering, computer science or a related course. These disciplines will equip you with core competencies needed for Solution Architect roles.
- Continue learning by taking additional courses based on the skills you want to learn or hone. Some hirers look for applicants knowledgeable in their business-specific programs. Others require professional certification, which you can get from IT companies.
- Gain relevant work experience. Previous jobs in data engineering, data science, software engineering and other related fields can help you secure this role.
- With enough experience, you can move up to become a Senior Solutions Architect or Solutions Department Manager. Consider completing a masters degree to advance to a Chief Information Officer position.
