What's it like to be a Sonographer?
Sonographers are healthcare professionals who are responsible for using specialised ultrasonic imaging equipment to capture images for doctors to view parts of the human body. They usually work with physicians to determine, interpret, and evaluate results of the image for further diagnosis.Tasks and duties
- Using ultrasonic imaging equipment for examination of the body.
- Assisting doctors in gathering, recording, and processing sonographic data.
- Performing appropriate procedures to provide data for interpretation by a physician.
How to become a Sonographer
Sonographers require specialised training in using ultrasonic imaging equipment to be able to provide diagnostic services to patients. There are several specialisations that you can pursue to work in different fields.
- 1.Complete at least a diploma in medical ultrasonography recognised by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA), which can take two years to complete. Students who took the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam must have at least passed five credits, including mathematics and a science subject to qualify for the diploma.
- 2.Professional certifications can help you specialise in different fields of sonography. Depending on your education level, they take at least a year to complete. You can take several certifications to be more versatile in different medical settings.
- 3.To succeed in this career, aspiring Sonographers can pursue the management track to leading diagnostic departments in hospitals or start private clinics. You can also pursue a corporate career as a Sonographer that works in equipment manufacturing, sales, or consultation.
