What's it like to be a Supply Chain Assistant?
As a Supply Chain Assistant, you help with the smooth operation of various processes. This role often involves managing shipping documentation, tracking inventory and dealing with warehouse management. You'll work closely with several stakeholders, such as suppliers, carriers and retail teams to ensure that goods are accurately dispatched and received. Supply Chain Assistants could work in various industries, including retail, production, pharmaceutical, or tech, essentially anywhere a product or service follows a supply chain. Being detail-oriented, capable of managing relationships, and having strong organisational skills are important for this role.
Tasks and duties
- Coordinating and managing all aspects of the supply chain process.
- Processing orders and overseeing cycle of order fulfilment.
- Responsible for managing third-party logistics services providers and evaluating their performance to ensure efficient service.
- Tracking inventory and liaising with warehouses to ensure adequate stock levels.
- Producing operational reports and schedules for efficiency.
- Supporting planning and forecasting of supply chain operations.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of supply chain strategies.
How to become a Supply Chain Assistant
While an SPM qualification is sufficient, some employers may prefer candidates with further education in supply chain management or a related field to become a Supply Chain Assistant.
- 1.Obtain a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate. Consider furthering education with a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management or a related field.
- 2.Gain experience in a position with similar job duties, such as scheduling, ordering supplies, and taking inventory, to stand out from other applicants.
- 3.Focus on developing key skills essential the role, including good communication skills, the ability to work independently and under pressure and attention to detail.
- 4.Develop proficiency in basic computer programs like Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as software related to supply chain management. While not always required, having knowledge of software systems commonly used in supply chain management, such as Oracle and SAP ECC, can be advantageous.
