Established by journalists in 2001, CIJ has a history of both advocacy and content production, focusing on content production by, with and for communities. This history still flavours CIJ's vision of independent media, one that is independent not just of political but also large corporate influence, with a space in the media landscape for community, private and public media ownership. The organisation is committed to human rights in all aspects of its work, and has a feminist politics of engagement, which includes acknowledging diversity, participatory processes and gender.
