Kuala Lumpur City Centre Kuala Lumpur10 to 11 years in the role, current employee
Working at UNHCR Kuala Lumpur offers a collaborative, multicultural, and purpose-driven environment, though it can be fast-paced and emotionally demanding due to the complex nature of refugee protection work.
The good thingsWorking for UNHCR Kuala Lumpur offers a positive and supportive working environment that blends professionalism with a strong sense of purpose. The office fosters a multicultural and inclusive atmosphere, where staff from diverse backgrounds collaborate closely to address humanitarian needs. Teamwork is highly valued, and colleagues are generally approachable, supportive, and willing to share knowledge. The work culture promotes open communication, mutual respect, and cross-departmental cooperation, allowing staff to learn from one another and grow professionally. The organization also encourages adaptability and creative problem-solving, given the dynamic nature of refugee protection work. Overall, the environment is both mission-driven and collegial, creating a sense of shared commitment and belonging among staff.
The challengesWhile the working environment at UNHCR Kuala Lumpur is generally positive, it also comes with challenges common in humanitarian field operations. The pace of work can be intense, with high caseloads and urgent situations requiring quick yet sound decision-making. Staff often need to adapt rapidly to changing priorities, especially during emergencies or policy shifts. Because the work is emotionally demanding—dealing directly with refugees’ complex and often distressing situations—it can lead to stress or compassion fatigue if not well-managed. Coordination among multiple units and external partners can sometimes be challenging, especially when deadlines are tight or information is incomplete. Additionally, the multicultural nature of the team, while enriching, can require extra effort in communication and understanding different working styles. These challenges, however, are often balanced by strong teamwork, shared goals, and the satisfaction of making a tangible difference.

    Good experience for humanitarian career
The good thingsWorking with UNHCR gives a good exposure to those seeking for a humanitarian career, specifically in refugee protection in the context of urban refugee condition. It is different from the ones that can be seen on TV where refugee camps are present, but in Kuala Lumpur is very different.
The challengesCareer enhancement should be encouraged in terms of promotion and also financial benefits. As the work is really stressful and risky, UN should consider promoting more benefits that would attract good quality employees.

    Unbelievable way of management
The good thingsMulti-national company. Great co-workers. Awesome environment. You get to see and know a lot of character from other countries from around the world. Salary is good. But honestly, i don't have much to say on the good things here.
The challengesHR person very rude. No people skill. Simply rude. The HOU for admin, always wants thing goes her own way even though there is even more convenient way to get the job done. When things didn't, she will simply blast out her anger throughout the whole team by shouting instead of calling the person in the room and discuss. There is no proper SOP and you will be asked to figure it out yourself. But when things goes wrong, prepare for the wrath. If you are a person who love to work by just following orders and willing to take all the nonsense, this company is perfect for you. Not for those who have their own principle. You are not allowed to make your own decision here. You will never grow. But hey, this is my experience. Feel free to try.

The challengesWith language constantly evolving on account of world developments, advances in science and technology, and even the rise of new fields altogether, and the UN being at the forefront of many of these developments, the UN translator finds himself/herself facing extra challenges on both levels of terminology and idiom. Yet I have to say that I personally find that these very challenges help make the work that much more satisfying.
