Account Assistant is an entry-level position for aspiring finance and accounting professionals to learn the fundamentals of the industry. They provide support to the accounting and finance teams, usually reporting to the Accounting Manager. Account Assistants handle financial statements, databases, and administrative tasks. Organisation, attention to detail, and proficiency in bookkeeping software are key skills for the role. Account Assistants work in corporations, the government, non-government organisations, and banks.
Tasks and duties
- Encoding and updating financial records.
- Providing support for the reconciliation of financial statements.
- Creating accounts payable and receivable documents.
- Handling correspondence with clients and vendors for transaction details.
- Executing administrative tasks such as emailing, printing, filing, and running errands.
- Processing financial government submissions and requirements.
- Ensuring the timely completion of financial statements for fiscal closings.
How to become an Account Assistant
To work as an Account Assistant, a bachelor degree in accounting, finance, commerce or a related field is usually required. Many Account Assistants enter the job to gain the work experience required to become a Chartered Accountant.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in accounting, finance, commerce or another related field.

Complete an internship in the accounting department of a recognised company.
- 3.
Get certification in Quickbooks, Odoo, or another accounting software.
- 4.
Gain 36 months of work experience to be eligible for a professional accountancy qualification.
- 5.
Obtain a professional accountancy qualification through a recognised accounting body. These usually take 3-5 years to complete.

Register as a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysia Institute of Accountants (MIA).
