What's it like to be an Account Executive?
Account executives are sales-based professionals who typically work in advertising, marketing, IT, and other related fields. They lead client acquisition and represent the company’s business integrity and capabilities. To successfully land clients, account executives must master their company’s mission and product value and effectively communicate these to clients.
Tasks and duties
- Making and presenting campaign proposals.
- Discussing the campaign’s scope, budget and deadlines with clients.
- Relaying information to employees and working with them to meet clients’ objectives.
- Organising files of multiple accounts.
- Completing tasks for projects happening simultaneously.
- Coming up with creative solutions to clients’ problems.
- Gathering and studying data.
- Meeting sales targets.
- Networking and building good relationships with clients.
Client satisfaction is at the heart of an account executive’s job. Apart from closing new deals, they handle multiple existing accounts by developing and implementing client-specific strategies and projects. Account executives must have deep knowledge of their clients’ industries. Account executives are vital to company growth as they help develop client loyalty and lasting partnerships.
How to become an Account Executive
A professional background in marketing, sales, media or communications can give you an edge when applying for this role. Knowledge in computer programs such as Microsoft Office is necessary to craft correspondences, formulate budgets, and arrange data.
- 1.Finish a college degree. Because of the high level of skills needed for this job, you must possess at least a bachelor’s degree. Hirers often value work experience over degrees. However, undergoing a business or marketing course can help you adapt to the workplace.
- 2.Brush up on your language skills. Account executives can better communicate with clients when they are fluent in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and English. Build confidence in speaking and writing in these languages, so you can land various clients.
- 3.Apply for an entry-level position. To build your career, look for a starting position in customer service, marketing or sales. Examples of roles include Sales Representative, Customer Service Representative, and Marketing Associate. You can learn the required skills to become an account executive in these roles.
- 4.Aim for a higher position. After boosting your skills and experience, work your way up to Sales Manager, wherein you will handle teams. Other senior positions include Sales Director or Vice President of Business Development.
