What's it like to be an Art Therapist?
An Art Therapist is a qualified psychotherapist that uses art to improve people’s well-being. They use art and the artistic process as a tool in their counselling, professional development and psychotherapy services. Art Therapists could work in private practice, psychiatry clinics, special needs schools, nursing homes, prisons, hospitals, or similar institutions.Tasks and duties
- Designing programs to meet the needs of different clients based on data gathering and interviews with the client’s loved ones.
- Assessing client’s mental health using their artistic process and using the data from the artwork to make recommendations for art therapy.
- Developing custom treatment and selecting artistic materials that involve studio art therapy and counselling.
- Providing an outlet for self-expression to help clients cope with cognitive or emotional impairments.
- Documenting client’s response to therapy and writing case studies.
How to become an Art Therapist
To work as an Art Therapist, you will need to complete a degree that is recognised by the Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy (MAP) and register with the Lembaga Kaunselor.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as psychology, social work, or fine arts.
- 2.Complete a postgraduate degree or certificate in Art Therapy that is accredited by the MAP (Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy).
- 3.Obtain a licence from the Lembaga Kaunselor in accordance with the Malaysia Counsellors Act 1998.
