What's it like to be an Artist?
Artists combine creativity, artistic skills, and attention to detail to create artworks. They use line, shape, colour and other artistic techniques, and work in a range of mediums such as painting, sculpture and pottery. They may create artworks to express themselves or to follow a client’s specifications for commissioned work. Some Artists choose to run their own art business.
Tasks and duties
- Crafting artworks based on client briefs or own creative expression.
- Working with hands and tools.
- Applying for grants and residencies to gain experience and hone their craft.
- Constantly improving their skills, and developing their own style through practice and continuous learning.
- Managing time and resources to create and sell artworks.
- Designing marketing and creative plans to gauge work profitability.
- Coordinating with galleries, museums, and festivals to display and market their work.
- Directly interacting with potential buyers and clients.
How to become an Artist
There are no formal qualifications required to work as an Artist, however a degree in fine art may provide you with exposure to different techniques and a network of other artists. Having natural talent and interest in the profession is often beneficial.
- 1.Finish a diploma or degree in fine arts. While not a required qualification, it may strengthen your skills and help you explore mediums and techniques such as drawing, painting, Photoshop and design software.
- 2.Choose a specialisation. While studying, you will have the opportunity to experiment with different styles and mediums.
- 3.Build experience and further develop your skills. You may be able to complete workshops and classes on your preferred medium. These may be offered by schools, galleries, and art-related organisations. You could choose to work with a mentor, who can teach you about the business side of being an Artist.
