What's it like to be a Caterer?
Events such as weddings, birthday parties, and company outings often need Caterers to provide food and drinks. Caterers meet the needs of clients by creating menus to suit their tastes, and they also coordinate the service for a successful event. Caterers need strong planning skills and often work in teams including chefs and waiting staff.Tasks and duties
- Preparing the menu for the event.
- Overseeing the quality of the food and service.
- Serving the prepared food to guests at events.
- Visiting sites to assess kitchen facilities and make plans for smooth workflows.
- Sourcing ingredients for each dish on the menu.
- Transporting food, tables, chairs, and other items needed.
- Assisting with the overall cleanup and maintenance of equipment used before and after the event.
How to become a Caterer
While education in culinary school isn't necessary, most prospective clients prefer caterers with culinary experience.
- 1.Complete a secondary school certificate or the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia). Taking cookery classes in high school will introduce you to the basics of preparing and serving food.
- 2.Consider working in small kitchens to gain experience and build networks.
- 3.Acquire food safety certification. This usually involves a short class and an exam. It can be taken online or at many universities and culinary schools.
- 4.Attain a licence to run your business. In Malaysia, you need to obtain a composite licence and other licences, like SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia or the Companies Commission of Malaysia), alcohol business licence, and business premise licence.
