What's it like to be a Chief Executive Officer?
Also known as President or Chief Executive, Chief Executive Officers (CEO) lead a company and execute major corporate strategies and decisions. They also update the Board of Directors about their company’s performance. CEOs may preside over board meetings, and their tasks can vary depending on the company's type, structure and size.
Tasks and duties
- Implementing the company's vision and mission.
- Planning, executing and incorporating long-term strategies.
- Evaluating the performance of other executive heads (for example, Directors and Vice Presidents).
- Maintaining the company's high social responsibility and setting strategies to preserve the capital of the business.
- Making final and vital decisions for the company.
- Managing risks and ensuring they are attended to and reduced.
- Reporting to the Board of Directors and fulfilling their ethical and legal accountability to the Board.
How to become a Chief Executive Officer
As someone in charge of a company’s overall operations, a CEO needs extensive education, training and experience. They also need well-developed skills in leadership, communication and management.
- Complete a bachelor degree in business, business administration, management or a related field.
- Pursue graduate studies. While not always required, a masters degree in business, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA), will help advance your career. An MBA degree usually takes two years to complete.
- Gain extensive industry experience. CEOs usually need many years of experience in management and operations to lead an organisation successfully.
- Get a professional certification. Although not necessary, specialisation diplomas and certificates will boost your chances of landing a role as a CEO. Consider pursuing credentials as a chartered financial analyst, certified management accountant, certified public accountant or project management professional.
