What's it like to be a Clinical Psychologist?
Clinical Psychologists help people with their mental health by applying their knowledge of psychological assessments and intervention methods. They work with clients and patients, where they will perform a thorough assessment before beginning personalised treatment. Due to the nature of their work, Clinical Psychologists need understanding, patience and compassion to deal with anything from brain injury to emotional trauma.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying and assessing behavioural or emotional conditions.
- Formulating and designing treatment or management programmes for patients.
- Assessing a patients’ risk and formulating mitigation plans.
- Discussing problems, diagnoses, and treatment plans with patients.
- Recording cases and writing reports.
- Assessing and evaluating cases.
- Conducting psychological research and publishing papers in local or international journals.
- Referring patients to other specialists, institutions, or support services when necessary.
- Attending training and research conferences.
Clinical Psychologists also conduct research to enhance the field of clinical psychology. They work in hospitals and other health facilities, or in private practice. Those with specialisations may work for private organisations, schools, or the police and the military. Clinical Psychologists can provide services to individuals of any age, couples, families, and groups.
How to become a Clinical Psychologist
To become a Clinical Psychologist, you need to complete a degree in psychology. Clinical Psychologists can choose to specialise and work with people of different ages or with people with special needs.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in Psychology.
- 2.Gain work experience in clinics or hospitals through internships or practicum programmes.
- 3.Complete a master degree in clinical psychology. This is a two-year programme. You may choose to study a specialisation such as paediatric and adolescent psychology.
- 4.Obtain a practising certificate by registering with the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology (MSCP). This is a requirement of the Allied Health Professions Act of 2016. A practising certificate is valid for two years.
