What's it like to be a Company Driver?
A Company Driver is responsible for transporting goods, materials or passengers between various locations safely, while adhering to driving regulations. They may also perform vehicle maintenance checks or other business-related errands. Company Drivers can be employed in numerous industries, from logistics firms to corporate entities where employee transportation or routine delivery of goods are needed. The role requires a valid driving licence, and prior professional driving experience is often desirable. Being a Company Driver also requires excellent time management, since punctuality is highly valued, as well as flexibility as you may be required to work weekends and evenings.
Tasks and duties
- Driving company vehicles to specified destinations as per the transport laws and regulations.
- Performing basic vehicle maintenance tasks, such as checking tyres, oil and water levels.
- Adhering to strict schedules and meeting delivery deadlines consistently.
- Recording details of deliveries, journey logs and fuel consumption.
- Ensuring vehicles are cleaned and maintained regularly.
- Loading and unloading vehicles according to company procedures and safety guidelines.
- Communicating effectively with dispatch or transport management to report any issues or discrepancies.
How to become a Company Driver
To qualify as a Company Driver, you must have a flawless driving history, displaying strong driving abilities and exhibit strong interpersonal skills.
- 1.Having at least a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate is often the minimum requirement for many employers.
- 2.Prior experience as a driver, whether from previous employment or personal driving, enhances your qualifications.
- 3.Hold a valid Competent Driving License (CDL) issued by Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Malaysia for vehicle classes D (Manual) or DA (Automatic). At the same time, ensure timely renewal of your license's validity for up to five years.
- 4.Maintain a clean driving record without any criminal convictions, which reflects your reliability and responsibility behind the wheel.
- 5.Demonstrate strong verbal and written skills in English and/or Bahasa Malaysia. Effective communication is crucial for interacting with passengers, navigating directions, and conveying information to employers or clients.
