What's it like to be a Driver?
Professional Drivers can pursue a number of career tracks. Drivers can become driver-partners at ride-hailing businesses, lorry or van drivers at logistics companies, delivery drivers at e-commerce companies, taxi drivers at traditional taxi businesses, or even official company drivers chauffeuring top management around.Tasks and duties
- Transporting goods to and from specified locations within the allotted travel time.
- Chauffeuring company staff to out-of-office meetings or other out-of-office destinations.
- Loading and unloading luggage, products, materials, and other goods.
- Monitoring status of traffic congestion or road construction along the determined route.
- Adjusting travel routes to reach destinations in a timely manner.
- Keeping a company vehicle clean and sanitised.
- Scheduling regular vehicle washing and maintenance.
- Accomplishing a travel log for the vehicles you are responsible for.
- Abiding by city traffic laws.
- Reporting any tickets, accidents, and damage to management.
How to become a Driver
To become a Driver, you must attain a Vocational Licence, which can take up to 2 years. Aside from the licence requirements, Drivers must have knowledge of the streets, traffic, and routes when it comes to the city they are operating in. Staying updated on traffic patterns and road projects is paramount to a Driver’s performance.
- 1.Attain the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
- 2.Enrol in a recognised driving institution or school near you.
- 3.Apply for a Learner’s Driving Licence and complete the necessary theory, computer, and practical examinations. This can take as little as 3 months depending on your existing driving knowledge. After passing all examinations, you will earn a Probationary Driving Licence.
- 4.After 2 years holding a Probationary Driving Licence, you can apply for a Competent Driving Licence.
- 5.Apply for a Vocational Licence depending on the career track you choose. This could be a Goods Driving Licence (GDL) for a Lorry Driver, a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) for Taxi, Van or Bus Drivers, or a Public Service Vehicle - Taxi/E-hailing Licence for a Ride-Hailing Driver. There are no vocational licences needed for Company Drivers.
- 6.Monitor the validity of your driving licences and make sure to renew your licence when necessary. It’s important to note that all Vocational Licences must be accompanied with a valid Competent Driving Licence.
- 7.Maintain a clean driving record and make sure you don’t get a record of arrests or criminal cases.
