What's it like to be a Dentist?
Dentists are medical professionals who diagnose and resolve oral health issues, particularly those concerning the gums, teeth, and mouth. They may do this alone or by leading a team of dental specialists such as assistants, hygienists and lab technicians. Because Dentists can perform surgery, they are also called dental surgeons. Skills needed for such dental procedures include manual dexterity, hand-and-eye coordination, and the ability to work with delicate tools, and with small and precise movements within a patient’s mouth.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting routine cleanings, root canals, cavity fillings, oral surgery, and other procedures.
- Checking teeth development.
- Restoring and removing teeth.
- Identifying oral conditions before they worsen.
- Instructing patients on proper dental care.
- Administering anaesthesia as part of a dental procedure.
- Collaborating with other members of the dental team to best care for the patient.
How to become a Dentist
Dentists need to be well-trained before practising their profession. Several years of education are required to enter the role.
- A degree in dentistry recognised by the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) usually takes five years to finish in Malaysia. The first half of your education will include learning medical science basics such as anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology. Meanwhile, the second part will require you to undergo training in teaching hospitals or clinical schools.
- Complete one year of compulsory service with the government before you can be a registered Dentist in Malaysia.
- After the basic five years, you can choose to further your education and specialise in different oral health fields such as orthodontics, oral surgery, and paediatric dentistry among others. Specialisation usually takes an extra three years to complete.
