What's it like to be an Optometrist?
Optometrists are eye care professionals that perform vision exams, diagnose vision problems, and recommend frames and lenses for correcting vision. Their work normally tests for vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and other low-vision problems. They also prescribe glasses for patients to improve their eyesight.
Tasks and duties
- Diagnosing sight for visual acuity.
- Performing sight tests for vision abnormalities.
- Prescribing frames, glass lenses, or contact lenses for eye correction.
- Performing eye tests for sight problems.
They can monitor medically-related eye conditions caused by glaucoma or diabetes. For special conditions, they can also provide referrals to ophthalmologists if further medical tests or eye surgery is required to treat vision problems.
How to become an Optometrist
Optometrists need to complete a four-year bachelor degree in optometry. This includes learning eye anatomy, basic biology, and training on how to conduct vision tests using various tools.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in optometry with a recognised Malaysian education institution.
- 2.Take the professional qualifying assessment conducted by the Malaysian Optical Council. Passing this examination ensures your eligibility to practise optometry in Malaysia.
- 3.Register to become a member of the Association of Malaysian Optometrists (AMO). This is a regulatory requirement by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
- 4.Taking postgraduate studies can allow you to specialise in other related fields of optometry. This improves your employability, gives you an edge on completing a medical degree in ophthalmology, and can allow you to start your own clinic that specialises in prescribing glasses or contact lenses.
