What's it like to be an Electrical Technician?
An Electrical Technician’s work primarily involves testing, installing, and maintaining electrical systems in houses, buildings, industrial plants, or cell towers. They also perform tests and repairs on electrical devices, working closely with electrical engineers to develop electrical plans. Electrical Technicians may work independently or with a team under a company’s maintenance department.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting Maintenance Engineers or Electrical Engineers in ensuring the safety of electrical utilities.
- Troubleshooting and resolving any electrical-related issues.
- Performing routine maintenance and fixes on electrical equipment.
- Logging daily power consumption of electrical devices.
- Performing inspections on electrical devices and machinery.
- Installing all wiring systems within a residential home, business, or industrial plant.
How to become an Electrical Technician
To become an Electrical Technician, you usually need a vocational certificate, diploma or bachelor degree in electrical engineering or a related field.

Graduate with a high vocational certificate in electrical power technology or a diploma/SKM or bachelor degree in electrical engineering or a related field.

Gain at least three years’ worth of experience in a related field.

After gaining experience as an Electrical Technician, consider progressing to a role such as Master Electrician or Electrical Design Engineer.
