What's it like to be a Maintenance Technician?
Generally, Maintenance Technicians ensure the functionality and overall condition of a premises. Resolving safety and comfort issues are their primary obligations. An effective Maintenance Technician is a jack-of-all-trades with a keen eye for detail to solve problems. In some cases, they may need to contact a specialised technician, like a plumber or electrician, to help carry out certain tasks.Tasks and duties
- Inspecting a building to identify any issues.
- Following preassigned orders, like oil changes, meter readings and equipment inspections.
- Performing preventive maintenance procedures and eliminating potential hazards.
- Maintaining the HVAC equipment for climate control.
- Monitoring the safety systems in the facility for fire, carbon monoxide and smoke.
- Assisting in the setup of ventilation and refrigeration systems.
- Conducting pest control such as spraying insecticides.
- Taking part in developing and implementing the budget for the maintenance department.
How to become a Maintenance Technician
You don’t need a formal qualification to become a Maintenance Technician. However, a relevant qualification can improve your employability.
- 1.Complete a secondary school certificate or a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
- 2.You can also take a two-year program at a community college or vocational school to learn about basic carpentry and plumbing.
- 3.You can also obtain certifications like Building Operator Certification or Building Maintenance Certification so you can stand out in the hiring process.
