What's it like to be an Electrician?
Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems in spaces such as homes, offices, malls, factories, parks, sidewalks, roads and other areas where people gather. An Electrician’s primary job is to ensure that a certain area’s power systems function optimally and that their installations comply with the Code of Practice set by the Department of Standards Malaysia.Tasks and duties
- Installing and repairing power systems.
- Inspecting fixtures, electrical wiring, and troubleshooting problems.
- Performing quality checks on technical components in wiring such as transformers and circuit breakers.
- Studying and understanding diagrams and blueprints.
- Conducting regular maintenance on equipment and fixtures.
How to become an Electrician
Electricians with a diploma are highly sought after in various industries such as energy, transportation, construction, and manufacturing. Aside from education, proper accreditation is needed to pursue an electrician career.
- 1.Complete an electrical diploma course from any institution accredited by the Ministry of Human Resources and the Department of Skill Development. A diploma course consists of a competency-based training course that runs from Level 2 to Level 4 and covers training on single-phase and three-phase system configurations, as well as low-voltage switchboards. Course completion takes 3.5 years.
- 2.Register with the Energy Commission to obtain a licence. While many Electricians in Malaysia are able to operate and find work even without this accreditation, becoming a licenced Electrician helps you set yourself apart from other Electricians, assures the quality and integrity of your work, and allows you to charge higher rates. You will need to take and pass a Competency Examination in order to become a designated Competent Person.
