How to become a Plumber
Plumbers must be certified by the Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara/National Water Services Commission (SPAN) in order to do business. Once licenced, a Plumber has many opportunities for career growth.
- 1.Attain the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or any level of the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM).
- 2.Get any or all of the following plumbing licences, depending on your specialisation. This could be a IPA Type A permit for water Plumbers who regularly work on water pipes and water fittings, IPA Type B permit for sewerage pipers who deal with connection pipes to sewers, IPA Type C permit for work contractors who construct, install, or modify water supply or sewerage systems, IPA Type D permit for operations and maintenance contractors who carry out basic repair services for a water supply or sewerage system, and/or IPA Type E permit for desludging contractors who are tasked with desludging sewage systems.
- 3.Gain work experience at a certified plumbing service in Malaysia. Just as Plumbers are licenced, so should plumbing service companies.
- 4.Define your specialisation and master your skils. There are many sub-specialisations under the specialised plumbing licences. For example, a Plumber with an IPA Type A permit might know all the facets of water pipes and fittings, but could be best known for installing water heaters or fixing low water pressure issues.
- 5.Start your own plumbing business. Once you have enough experience, you can pursue your own licenced plumbing business and hire other Plumbers to join you.
