What's it like to be an Engineer?
Engineers use mathematics, scientific principles, and technology to analyse problems and provide solutions to increase an organisation’s efficiency, build new products, create technological advancements, and design newer, safer, more innovative, and cost-efficient solutions. They aim to make sense of complex systems and improve existing processes. Engineers often specialise in a discipline such as civil, mechanical, electrical, industrial, environmental, electronic, and chemical engineering.Tasks and duties
- Analysing problems and developing an understanding of an organisation’s objectives, strategies, and goals to come up with the appropriate solutions.
- Designing processes, materials, or products, and coming up with their respective improvements.
- Creating and interpreting blueprints and diagrams.
- Making detailed drawings for plans.
- Writing up project specifications.
- Projecting budget costs and establishing timelines.
- Coordinating project progress.
How to become an Engineer
Becoming an Engineer entails intensive study, experience, and accreditation. Engineering on its own is a broad discipline, with several tracks for specialisation depending on the industry you want to join.
- 1.Take up a diploma or a bachelor degree programme in engineering. Ensure that your programme is accredited or recognised by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC). An engineering diploma will take between 2 to 3 years to complete, while a bachelor degree requires 3 to 4 years of study. A bachelor degree is essential if you wish to be recognised as a Professional Engineer later on.
- 2.Degree holders must register as Graduate Engineers upon graduation. This allows them to enter the workforce, gain experience, and be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer after gaining 3 years of work experience.
- 3.Graduate Engineers with at least 3 years of experience may then apply to register as Professional Engineer.
