What's it like to be a Flight Attendant?
Flight Attendants ensure that a flight is stress-free for passengers, and they safeguard a positive image of an airline. They are also responsible for demonstrating emergency procedures, instructing passengers regarding safety protocols and what to do during turbulence, and performing mandatory safety checks.
Tasks and duties
- Participating in pre-flight briefings to discuss procedures, weather, and service plans.
- Conducting pre-flight safety inspections and ensuring that the plane is sanitised.
- Giving information to the customers regarding the flight.
- Greeting passengers and ushering them to their respective seats.
- Assisting passengers with their luggage and ensuring that all items are properly stowed in overhead or under-seat compartments.
- Reassuring passengers during turbulence.
- Providing additional assistance to passengers with special needs including children, people with disabilities, or elders.
A Flight Attendant must embody a calm demeanour to create a welcoming environment that will keep the passengers calm. To improve customer satisfaction, they provide customer service, such as serving snacks and beverages.
How to become a Flight Attendant
Before becoming a Flight Attendant, you must first undergo formal training and certification. These are necessary because you will be responsible for the safety and comfort of passengers.
- 1.Complete Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or a Malaysian Skill Certificate (SKM) Level 3.
- 2.While a bachelor degree in hospitality and tourism isn’t necessary, formal education will equip you with knowledge and skills so you can be better qualified for the role. Being fluent in English or another foreign language will also be beneficial for your career.
- 3.Get experience in the service industry. Most Flight Attendants are often employed in a service industry before getting their first job as a Flight Attendant. This may include working in restaurants, hotels, or resorts.
- 4.Apply for a job. After a year or two in the service industry, you can apply for various Flight Attendant positions with various airlines.
