What's it like to be a Food Technologist?
Food Technologists develop and improve existing food products and set standards for producing, packaging and marketing food. They adhere to government and industry standards and apply these in food production. Food Technologists also research and experiment with ingredients, quality, safety and developing new products and techniques in food production. They may be found in various food industries including agriculture, food processing and retail businesses.
Tasks and duties
- Developing new and improved techniques and processes for food processing, preservation and production.
- Performing rigorous quality checks and controls to ensure food products are safe and compliant with health standards.
- Testing food samples for particular types of moulds, yeasts and bacteria that may be harmful for consumption.
- Designing processes and machinery for the production of products in large quantities.
- Working closely with other food production staff including microbiologists, engineers and packaging specialists to enhance product quality and safety.
- Staying updated on latest trends and scientific advancements in food technology and nutrition.
- Evaluating and verifying product compliance against the set nutritional, taste, texture and colour standards.
How to become a Food Technologist
A minimum of a Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) is required for the role. Graduates with a related food science degree and some industry experience are preferred.
- 1.Complete STPM with a minimum GCPA of 2.0 with at least two science subjects.
- 2.Graduate with a bachelor degree in food science and technology, chemistry, nutrition or another related field.
- 3.Undergo an internship at a food laboratory, factory or another related company.
- 4.Consider getting certification in food safety training.
