What's it like to be a Production Manager?
Production Managers coordinate all production activities and operations in a warehouse. They are responsible for the timetable and they ensure that the production process runs smoothly. The set of tasks may vary depending on the nature of the production system or the type of goods being processed and produced. They also monitor and handle the maintenance of equipment, and promote the health and safety standards in the warehouse.Tasks and duties
- Ensuring that the timetable is followed and making necessary adjustments.
- Training new employees in the warehouse.
- Supervising the work ethics of production personnel and keeping track of attendance.
- Coordinating with the equipment and processing teams for effective production.
- Participating in management review of the organisation’s quality, and reviewing the budget plan.
- Monitoring productivity rates and spearheading quality control programmes.
- Collating and analysing data by putting together reports for both factory managers and customers.
How to become a Production Manager
Since you will be managing and supervising a team, formal education and years of experience in a lower position are required to excel in this career.
- 1.Consider completing a bachelor degree in manufacturing or industrial engineering. In some cases, especially for more specialised industries, employers may favour those with a more specific related degree, such as chemistry, civil engineering, or electrical engineering. Registering as a Graduate Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a must if you want to work professionally, and may help you advance to the role of Production Manager.
- 2.Get an entry-level position at a warehouse. Food manufacturing and processing companies typically offer such employment. You can also undergo on-the-job training where you will be working under a Production Manager where the tasks may vary depending on the industry. Take that time to learn about reporting, assessing, and managing.
- 3.There are different positions you can pursue. After one to three years of experience, you can become a Production Manager or Production Supervisor.
- 4.For mid level positions, you can advance to the roles of either Factory Manager or Operations Manager. Once you get enough experience and have developed an in-depth understanding of the industry, you can become a Plant Manager or a General Manager.
