What's it like to be a Fund Accountant?
A Fund Accountant is a finance professional who maintains and manages the financial records of an investment fund. They usually handle complex financial data to conduct the day-to-day function of an organisation and are responsible for calculating net asset values (NAVs), validating and reconciling fund shares, and managing financial reporting activities. Working primarily in financial institutions, such as investment banks, mutual fund companies, and insurance companies.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining financial records for mutual or hedge funds, and other types of investment portfolios.
- Calculating a fund's income, expenses and updating the net asset value (NAV).
- Preparing fund financial statements and disclosures in accordance with accounting standards.
- Reconciling portfolio holdings and cash balances with custodians and brokers.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory and fund-specific accounting and reporting requirements.
- Analysing and verifying fund transactions and activity for accuracy.
- Assisting with the audit process by providing auditors with necessary reports and documentation.
How to become a Fund Accountant
This position requires a Chartered Accountant qualification and preferably fund management experience.
- 1.Graduate with a bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance, or another related degree.
- 2.Undergo a related internship related to accounting or fund management.
- 3.Work for 6 months in an accounting job such as Junion Fund Accountant.
- 4.Register with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
- 5.Obtain membership at the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) after three years of work experience.
- 6.Consider obtaining qualification as Chartered Financial Analyst.
