What's it like to be a Hotel Manager?
Hotel Managers stay on top of all the aspects of running a hotel from accommodations and accounting to marketing and customer service. Their goal is to achieve customer satisfaction, thereby boosting the hotel’s reputation and profit. Hotel Managers oversee supervisors and employees in different departments, making sure that the establishment is running smoothly. Equipped with knowledge on best practices of hotel management, these managers lead the staff in implementing guest policies and following procedures created by the hotel owner. Because they work with multi-level members, Hotel Managers should have strong collaboration and communication skills.Tasks and duties
- Hiring and coaching staff.
- Scrutinising rooms, public areas, and facilities to spot insufficiencies.
- Making sure that the hotel’s standards for cleanliness, service, appearance, and other aspects are fulfilled.
- Monitoring and handling hotel’s financial records, and allocating funds.
- Observing staff performance and guest satisfaction.
- Handling customer complaints.
- Suggesting and implementing marketing and promotion strategies.
- Ensuring that the hotel meets safety and health standards dictated by law.
How to become a Hotel Manager
As senior managers, Hotel Managers need to be multi-skilled and flexible. They develop these important skills through education and extensive experience.
- 1.Consider finishing tertiary education through a diploma or bachelor degree in hotel management, hospitality, tourism and management, business management or other related fields. This gives you practical skills and knowledge needed by a Hotel Manager. In some cases, you may still land this role as long as you have years of professional experience with hotel management.
- 2.Hotel Managers usually require a minimum of 3 to 5 years of work experience in the industry. To build your credentials, look for entry-level roles in hotels, or hospitality establishments such as resorts, casinos, and others. Work your way to the top by becoming a supervisor or department head. Because a Hotel Manager oversees many aspects, learn as much as you can from every department you work in.
- 3.Learn as many foreign languages as you can to cater to the hotel’s international clientele. Important languages to learn are Mandarin and English, among others.
