The role of an IT Project Manager is to facilitate the successful completion of IT projects. These projects could be a customer-facing app or an internal system that forms part of a company's IT infrastructure. They plan the budget and create a project framework to help accomplish objectives within a given time frame. This means that they must have the ability to communicate project goals, organise people and resources, and track time and expenses to ensure the project runs efficiently.
Tasks and duties
- Planning, initiating and tracking the progress of IT projects.
- Communicating project objectives and progress with stakeholders and project team members.
- Monitoring and controlling the project budget.
- Performing cost-benefit analyses.
- Providing performance reports on the project and optimising workflow.
How to become an IT Project Manager
The requirements for IT Project Managers can vary between industries. However, they are usually expected to have several years of experience and a relevant qualification.
- 1.Complete an IT-related bachelor degree.
- 2.Some employers prefer candidates with relevant certifications in IT project management methodologies such as Agile. Obtaining certifications in relevant IT-related frameworks such as Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) can also give you an edge in growing your career.
- 3.Gain industry experience to advance your career. Experience in using technology to automate or solve business problems will help you progress towards senior leadership positions such as Chief Information Officer or Chief Technology Officer.
