What's it like to be a Landscaper?
Landscapers create and put together outdoors spaces such as golf courses, university campuses, sports fields, cemeteries, and parks. The work is closely related to horticulture, assembling, and caring for flowers, trees, and bushes. Unlike gardeners who tend mostly to plants, Landscapers build the structure and shape of a landscape. This includes installing fountains and gazebos as well as artificial ponds and tiny hills. Their scope of work also includes plumbing, drainage, and timberwork.
Tasks and duties
- Planting trees, flowers and shrubs.
- Removing unhealthy greenery, weeding and mulching landscape beds.
- Operating and maintaining watering equipment.
- Installing playground equipment, fences, drainage systems, pools and rock gardens.
- Redesigning and repairing existing landscapes.
- Maintaining greenery with fertilisers, pesticides, and trimming.
How to become a Landscaper
Formal education is not required to become a Landscaper, but proficiency in landscaping techniques and an understanding of the equipment and costs needed for projects are essential. Refining your skills through practise at home, volunteer work and internships will be an advantage. Bachelor degrees and courses are also available for aspiring Landscapers.
- 1.Get experience through an apprenticeship or on informal projects around the neighbourhood. It is possible to work as a Landscaper without a degree, provided that you have knowledge and experience in plants and outdoor spaces.
- 2.Obtain a bachelor degree in a related field. A bachelor degree in landscape architecture or horticulture can provide more opportunities for aspiring Landscapers.
- 3.Gain more professional experience by applying to different projects or companies.
