What's it like to be a Maintenance Engineer?
Maintenance Engineers that workplace equipment and machinery is functioning efficiently and as expected, while keeping staff and other stakeholders safe. Maintenance Engineers typically work in industrial environments such as factories, constructions, and farms. But they are also often needed in places like hospitals, schools, and even commercial buildings. With that being said, these professionals must at least possess technical knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to communicate and work under pressure.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting regular inspections of workplace equipment to ensure functionality.
- Addressing or identifying flaws in equipment and taking charge of appropriate actions, from troubleshooting and restoration to improvement and replacement.
- Overseeing and supporting the handling of new or existing equipment.
- Managing all requirements, including budgeting and documentation, of the installation or maintenance of equipment.
- Creating detailed and relevant instructions for the use of equipment, tools, technology, or other machinery.
How to become a Maintenance Engineer
Maintenance Engineers are usually required to hold a bachelor degree in engineering or science. Industry experience may also be an advantage.
Complete a bachelor degree in engineering or science. Depending on the industry you plan on entering, you may opt to take up mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, maintenance engineering, or engineering technology.
Undertake an apprenticeship, internship, or on-the-job training.
Get licensed as a Maintenance Engineer. You can do this by entering technical training institutions.
