What's it like to be a Merchandiser?
Merchandisers work for retail stores such as grocery stores and department stores and are responsible for boosting sales through sufficient product inventory. Apart from making sure that products are displayed attractively for customers, they must also monitor and predict industry trends based on consumer buying behaviour.Tasks and duties
- Ensuring optimised display, rotation and volume of stocks on shelves.
- Negotiating with suppliers and buyers on prices.
- Determining sources of wastage and losses.
- Keeping track of sales.
- Analysing competitor activities and pricing strategies.
- Understanding consumer behaviours.
- Monitoring and predicting industry trends.
How to become a Merchandiser
Although having prior work experience is advantageous, it is not a requirement to become a Merchandiser. Some companies may require a degree in graphic design, visual communications or visual merchandising.
- 1.Complete secondary school and attain Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia certificate. This is a mandatory public examination equivalent to O-level.
- 2.A bachelor degree in advertising, marketing, or business is not required, however it will be helpful especially in progressing your career.
- 3.Apply for a merchandiser job in a retail store or for a specific retail brand.
